Detroit may be a city down on it’s luck, but it’s definitely a city with spirit and this time of year it’s holiday spirit. I made my way to the downtown area a few weeks ago for Detroit’s annual tree lighting ceremony in Campus Martius Park, also home to the city’s outdoor ice skating rink. While it’s no Rockefeller Center, Campus Martius is the center of a vibrant downtown on the verge of a new beginning. Pop up shops line Woodward Avenue, their doors open wide and tables stocked with holiday gifts and cheer. One in particular is Rock Paper Scissors, a stationery lovers dream which has transported their Ann Arbor brick and mortar home to a small outpost in Detroit for the season. Other great locations to visit while admiring the tree are The Detroit Shoppe, specializing in all things Michigan made, Spielhaus Toys, The Hand Made Company, and CityLoft which is part of the Somerset Collection. A night of holiday festivities and shopping topped off by a trip to the Detroit Beer Co. was just what I needed to kick off the season! I’m already making plans to head back for ice skating and hot chocolate.
From the homegrown farm to table delights of the Eastern Market to the world class art on display at the DIA, the city is a true diamond in the rough. A night out can be done up with a visit to Michael Symon’s Roast followed by an evening at the lavish Detroit Opera House. Or dress it down with microbrews and creative pizza combinations at Motor City Brewing Works and catch a concert at The Fillmore Detroit. There are also many boutique shops popping up all over town and plenty of great places for an afternoon coffee break. So grab a travel buddy and make a day out of it. There’s plenty to do and lots to see!
